The ICRC's humanitarian relief work in Afghanistan

The ICRC has been working to protect and assist communities affected by conflict in Afghanistan since 1987. Our team also works closely with the Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS) and local authorities to jointly strengthen capacity to confront humanitarian crises.
Here is how we supported primary healthcare facilities in 2023:
* 1,202,612 patients, mostly women and children, received primary health care at 47 health facilities of the Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS) that are supported by the ICRC
* 316,642 doses of routine vaccinations were administered at 46 ARCS-supported health
facilities
* 10,736 malnourished children benefited from our nutrition program in 46 basic-health-care clinics
* 1,563 patients benefited from mental health and psycho social support services in Kandahar and Lashkar Gah
* 7 ARCS and 2 Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) primary-health-care centers were
upgraded, improving the working conditions and providing patients with better access to
the outpatient departments.

HOSPITAL CARE:

*We supported the salaries of 10,900 health-care workers and running costs of 33 hospitals with a capacity of 7,057 beds, serving 26 million people (January to April 2023). Gradually phasing out the support provided as part of the Hospital Resilience Program, 25 hospitals continued to be provided with financial support for salaries and running costs until August, and contributions towards their running costs until December
* 4 vehicles were donated to MoPH blood bank to help in blood collection activities
* 150 nurses, doctors and midwives received emergency room trauma care training
* 80 health-care workers at Mirwais Regional Hospital were trained in triaging patients in
the emergency department
* 507,719 patients received consultations in the emergency room of the Ghazni Regional and Provincial Hospital, Rokha District Hospital and Mirwais Regional Hospital, Kandahar. The three hospitals were also provided with emergency room equipment, furniture and medical supplies. A large tent was donated to Ghazni Regional Hospital to be used as a patient waiting area/emergency triage reception area 31,400 female patients received specialized treatment and 26,762 babies were successfully delivered at Mirwais Hospital.
* The 620-bed facility was connected to a dedicated emergency power line of the public grid and equipped with a solar power hybrid system to provide stable and sustainable electricity supplies for improved working conditions.
* The water supply system at Farah Provincial Hospital, with a capacity of 120 beds, was
repaired and upgraded to ensure sustainable water supply
* We provided financial support to renovate the heating system of Baghlan Provincial Hospital for better patient care.
