Threefold increase in the number of children killed or injured in Ukraine over the past three months.
Three years after the conflict began, its impact on children and families remains significant.
- 3.5 million lack access to basic goods and services, including adequate food or shelter,
- 3.7 million internally displaced people and 5.6M refugees
- 1 in 3 children live in homes without functioning water supply and sewage
- 50% children lack access to an area to play at home or outside
Continued and relentless attacks on critical water, sanitation, and energy infrastructure, children’s homes, schools and healthcare facilities, combined with rising poverty, have caused an increase in material deprivation.
Despite all the challenges, there is still hope driven by the country’s extraordinary resilience embodied by its children and youth. UNICEF is uniquely positioned to build on the resilience and resolve of the country through its child rights mandate, technical expertise, and robust evidence-base for humanitarian and development programming and field presence.

That night, she was in bed after drawing a card for her mother when explosions shattered her home. Her mother rushed her to safety behind two walls before the balcony windows blew out from the blast. "I covered my head and ears with my hands because it was so loud and scary," Olena recalls. Eleven people were killed, and 50 others, including seven children, were injured in the attack.
