Russia-Ukraine Armed Conflict: Thank you for your continued support

Since the international armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine escalated on 24 February 2022, the world has witnessed widespread human suffering and tremendous destruction. In the past year, it has cost the lives of 7,199 civilians and put 17.7 million people in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. Communities are struggling to survive the harsh cold of winter and thousands of families are suffering the pain of not knowing where or how their loved ones are. As a neutral and impartial humanitarian organization, the ICRC, together with partners in the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, is on the ground in Ukraine and neighbouring countries providing emergency assistance and protection to vulnerable families – this is made possible thanks to your support.

Nadezhda and Vasily were school sweethearts who have been married for many years. On an evening last year, a shell struck the roof of their house, wounding Nadezhda and leaving her buried under the rubble. “I heard an explosion, and in the blink of an eye, everything collapsed around me,” shared Nadezhda. After helping Nadezhda and Vasily assess the damage to her home, the ICRC provided building supplies to repair the roof, install new windows and replace broken doors to give Nadezhda her home back. "In two weeks, everything was repaired. Now we are no longer afraid of the freezing winter,” said Nadezhda and Vasily.

As frontlines continue to shift, more civilians will be caught in the horrors of conflict, with lives lost and families torn apart. The need for help persists, and our commitment remains strong – we will continue acting as a neutral and impartial humanitarian organization to assist and protect the most vulnerable in Ukraine and beyond.
