On August 26, a sudden and violent flood struck northern Nepal following the sudden collapse of a glacier. Waves of water, mud, and debris, up to 10 meters high, swept through populated areas in the districts of Rasuwa and Nuwakot, destroying bridges and washing away major transportation routes.

The death toll is devastating: 270 victims have already been confirmed, while between 8,000 and 10,000 people are reported missing. Hundreds of families are living in anguish, unable to locate their loved ones, while entire communities remain isolated and cut off from essential connections.

Volunteers from the Nepal Red Cross Society have been responding since the first hours of the emergency, reaching the worst-affected areas and providing assistance to the population. The first five emergency shelters for displaced people have been set up, and the distribution of drinking water, tarpaulins, blankets, and hygiene kits has begun. At the same time, teams are working to clear paths through the debris and reach communities that remain isolated.

The priority is to provide medical assistance and ensure safe shelter for people who have lost everything, while continuing to support affected communities throughout the subsequent phases of the emergency.

Il 26 agosto un’improvvisa e violenta inondazione ha colpito il nord del Nepal, in seguito al collasso improvviso di un ghiacciaio. Onde di acqua, fango e macerie alte fino a 10 metri si sono riversate sui centri abitati nei distretti di Rasuwa e Nuwakot, travolgendo ponti e spazzando via le principali vie di comunicazione.

Il bilancio è drammatico: si contano già 270 vittime accertate e tra le 8.000 e le 10.000 persone risultano disperse. Centinaia di famiglie vivono nell’angoscia per l’impossibilità di rintracciare i propri cari, mentre intere comunità si trovano isolate e prive di collegamenti.

I Volontari e le Volontarie delle Croce Rossa Nepalese sono intervenuti fin dalle prime ore dell’emergenza per raggiungere le aree più colpite e portare assistenza alla popolazione. Sono stati allestiti i primi cinque campi di accoglienza per gli sfollati e avviata la distribuzione di acqua potabile, teloni, coperte e kit sanitari. Parallelamente, le squadre stanno lavorando per aprire varchi tra i detriti e raggiungere le comunità rimaste isolate.
